Explore the International Market Place in Waikiki: The Hawaii Girl Life Ultimate Shopping and Dining Destination

Planning a trip to Waikiki? Don’t miss the International Market Place, a vibrant hub that combines shopping, dining, and cultural experiences in the heart of Hawaii. This iconic marketplace offers a unique blend of modern retail and rich local history, making it a must-visit for both tourists and locals.

A Brief History of the International Market Place

Established in 1956, the International Market Place has transformed from a bustling outdoor market into a contemporary shopping destination. Despite its modernization, the marketplace retains its cultural roots, offering visitors a glimpse into Hawaii’s vibrant heritage. Maybe not all locals will agree, but I personally love the new version and readily visit much more often than the old International Market Place with its focus on swap meet type vendors.

Shopping Options for Everyone

With over 80 shops, the International Market Place is a shopper’s paradise:

  • Luxury Brands: Explore select retailers like Balenciaga (were any of you addicted to their City bag back in the day? Me too…I can still smell the chèvre leather of my favorite bag!), Burberry, and Christian Louboutin for stylish apparel and accessories. Or head over to a few of my favorites, Free People, Anthropologie, Banana Republic, and Pandora (my personal travel souvenir-I love collecting their charms from destinations all over the world).
  • Local Artisans: Find unique jewelry, Hawaiian shirts, and beautiful art pieces crafted by local artisans, perfect for souvenirs.

Savor Diverse Culinary Delights

After a day of shopping, treat yourself to a diverse selection of dining options:

  • Hawaiian Cuisine: Enjoy traditional dishes like poke and loco moco that showcase local flavors. For a truly local experience, Liliha Bakery is where it’s at. Wanting something slightly more upscale? Eating House 1849 by Roy Yamaguchi is a delicious take on local cuisine.
  • Casual Options: The Kuhio Ave Food Hall on the ground level along with Mitsuwa MarketPlace upstairs features yummy options for a quick, casual meal, while Kona Coffee Purveryors and B Patisserie is a must for a good coffee (or even hot chocolate-they make a nice one) and a pastry. My tip? If you can have gluten, the kouign amann is seriously life changing, so incredibly delicious and especially good here. Gluten intolerant? The almond cake is a special treat, moist, delicately flavored, and the perfect accompaniment to your Kona coffee.

Cultural Experiences to Enrich Your Visit

The International Market Place also hosts cultural experiences that highlight Hawaii’s rich traditions. Throughout the year, enjoy live performances featuring Hawaiian music and hula dancing, adding a festive atmosphere to your visit.

Beautiful Outdoor Setting

One of the highlights of the International Market Place is its stunning outdoor environment. The lush landscaping, complete with a majestic banyan tree, creates a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation and photos. Don’t miss the Don Ho statue near the front!

Convenient Location Near Waikiki Beach

Located just steps from Waikiki Beach, the International Market Place is easily accessible. Whether you’re looking to shop, dine, maybe get a blowout at Drybar, snuggle some adorable kitties at the Cat Cafe, or enjoy a cultural experience, this marketplace is the perfect destination and my own favorite spot to meet with friends for some shopping and dining.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Best Time to Visit: For a quieter experience, try to visit on weekdays when crowds are lighter.
  • Parking: Utilize the attached parking garage for convenient access to the marketplace. This garage is new so it’s a good choice if you have an oversized vehicle. Some of the older garages in Waikiki can’t accommodate a taller SUV. And don’t forget to take your ticket with you! That validation will definitely help with the parking rates.
  • Stay Updated: Check the International Market Place Events Page for the latest updates on live performances and special promotions.

The International Market Place in Waikiki is more than just a shopping destination; it’s a vibrant blend of culture, cuisine, and community. With luxury brands, local treasures, and delicious Hawaiian dishes, this marketplace has something for everyone. So much so that it’s a local favorite as well. Make sure to include the International Market Place in your Waikiki itinerary for an unforgettable experience!
