Where to Stay: Waikiki

Experience the Moana Surfrider Hotel: The First Lady of Waikiki

As you’re planning your next trip to Oahu, I have a personal favorite hotel recommendation. For the perfect blend of luxury, history, and exquisite Hawaiian charm, the Moana Surfrider Hotel, A Westin Resort and Spa in Waikiki is your ideal destination. Known as the “First Lady of Waikiki,” this historic hotel offers an unforgettable experience, complete with breathtaking views, exquisite dining, and cultural immersion with its beautiful blend of Victorian elegance and modern comfort. Here’s everything you need to know about this iconic hotel!

A Historic Treasure in Waikiki

Opened in 1901, the Moana Surfrider Hotel is one of Hawaii’s most cherished hotels. Its stunning architecture and beautifully landscaped grounds reflect the elegance of a bygone era. The hotel has hosted dignitaries and celebrities alike, making it a landmark of Hawaiian hospitality. While not a celebrity by any means, it was also my choice as a wedding venue due to its stunning beauty and elegance with those amazing views right on Waikiki beach. The rooms, service, and wedding services were everything I could have dreamed of and made my wedding even more perfect than I could have ever imagined.

Luxurious Accommodations

The Moana Surfrider offers a range of accommodations to suit every traveler’s needs:

      • Ocean View and City View Rooms in the Diamond or Tower Wings : Enjoy spectacular views of Waikiki Beach or vibrant Kalakaua Avenue. If selecting an ocean view room, look forward to waking up to the sound of the waves right from your sun-kissed balcony. Nothing says a Hawaiian vacation like those views of the glittering blue waters and powdery white sand.

      • Historic Banyan Room: Experience a unique stay in this special room with its intimate layout and local touches that highlights the Moana Surfrider Hotel’s beautiful history.

    Dining Experiences to Savor

Indulge in exquisite dining options at the Moana Surfrider, where culinary excellence meets Hawaiian flair:

        • Beachhouse Grand Salon: Relish delectable cuisine with stunning ocean views in this private dining room which can also be reserved as an event space. I can attest to the beauty and luxurious ambiance of this room with its large windows facing the ocean. Intimate, stunningly beautiful with its architecture, and excellent food and service…there really isn’t anything else in Hawaii quite like it. Beautifully bright during the day, sunset hour is like no other when viewing it from this private dining venue. Grand Salon indeed.

        • The Veranda: Unwind with afternoon tea on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, light meals, and handcrafted cocktails in a beautiful historic setting. Something special with limited dates is the Butterfly Keiki Tea (keiki as the Hawaiian word for child). Check the Moana Surfrider Hotel website for additional information or to make your reservation.

      Relaxation and Recreation

The hotel offers a variety of amenities designed to enhance your stay:

          • Pool and Beach Access: Relax by the pool or take a relaxing sunrise or sunset stroll on the sandy shores of Waikiki Beach. With over 600 feet of soft sandy beach fronting the hotel, it’s one of the longest stretches of sand in Waikiki. Other areas (like the one fronting the Hilton Hawaiian Village) may have a big stretch of sand, but those areas tend to have quite a bit of coral and rocks in the water, making it necessary to pack your water shoes. Even our usually non-sensitive local feet have a tough time wading into the water here. The beach fronting the Moana Surfrider Hotel is much clearer with no water shoes required. My tip? Take a surfing lesson at this beginner’s surf spot. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of riding your first wave in the warm Hawaiian sunshine.

          • Moana Lani Spa Services: Treat yourself to rejuvenating spa treatments that combine traditional Hawaiian techniques with modern wellness practices. As a massage addict myself, may I suggest the Lomi Ho’okipa massage, a massage technique special to us here in Hawaii. Or you might elect for one of my favorites, the Pohaku Ola, or hot stone massage. Add on a body treatment, some skin care, have your nails done, and you’ll be relaxed and ready for the rest of your time here on our island home.

        Prime Location in Waikiki

Conveniently located in the heart of Waikiki, the Moana Surfrider is just steps away from the best attractions:

            • Shopping: Explore nearby boutiques and luxury brands. See our post on the International MarketPlace right across the street.

            • Dining: Savor local cuisine at acclaimed restaurants.

            • Beaches: Enjoy the sun and surf at world-famous Waikiki Beach.
